For as long as I've been an artist I've never finished an art journal. Or sketchbook for that matter. I can be quite fickle and in the past had the urge (and lack of will to refrain) to buy ALL THE JOURNALS! Now, the urge is still there but my desire to use what I have is stronger (at the moment.) With sketchbooks, I would use one for a while and then find a cute new one. Then months--or years later I would pick it up and feel weird about using it again. Like that journal belonged to 'past me' and I felt like I was violating her privacy. It's totally normal to talk about yourself in third person right??
Ever since I started 'art journaling' late last year, I've had a goal in the back of my mind to fill a journal. So far it hasn't happened...
And as much as I love the process of using prompts I feel it can make my journal feel a bit choppy. There really isn't anything making it feel unified. Not to mention it's starting to get harder to work in because the front half is so bulky and warped compared to the latter half.
---I will continue my Journal52 because it is a great way to commit to art journaling and I'm having fun doing it :).---
I started this new journal with the idea of working throughout it until the whole thing is finished. It's a 30 page journal that Brandon bound for me (thanks love!) I skipped the first spread to make a 'this journal belongs to' page. Then I went through book and cut into every other page. Now each spread has an extra page in the middle.
After I cut some of the pages, they needed a bit of reinforcement. I used Washi tape here and there. I cut circles out of a few of the pages and collaged strips of black card stock. Here I stapled and taped a folded piece of card stock to add another dimension to the spread. I don't consider any of these spreads finished yet and I like the idea of slowly and evenly filling the book.
Have you ever approached art journaling in this way? What are some of the techniques you enjoy using? Please let me know in the comments! I love to hear from you xx
