I've had a Moleskine journal for years but I never really knew what to do with it. It might seem weird but I never thought to put gesso on the pages. It doesn't take paint well without a primer and the pages are so smooth that pencil falls flat. Pen was all I ever used in it. My last trip to the art store I picked up Golden Absorbent Ground. I didn't buy it with the intent to use it in my Moleskine but I slapped it in there the other night. It worked way better than I expected! I was able to fully saturate the page and I even used a spray bottle and it didn't soak through.
This is such a fantastic ground! I have found a new love for my Moleskine. Now I have three active journals, which is the way I like it. I love being able to work on one while the other is drying.
Do you have multiple journals going at once? Or do you wait until you finish one before you start another?
