For the longest time I have been totally focused on making pieces that are aesthetically pleasing. Weird, right? To want to make art pretty? Our world holds beauty above all else. We are told to find beauty in everything. Find beauty in our flaws and the flaws of others. It got me thinking about how ugliness makes people uncomfortable. It's such a terrible thing to be ugly. Why? Why instead of being told to find beauty in ugly things, don't we just accept the ugly for what it is? Ugly.
We have reframe things to make it acceptable to like ugly. Like a dog that's "so ugly it's cute." Why not just love the dog because of its ugliness?
This became way more philosophical than I intended... but that will happen from time to time.
This art journal session began with the intention to create something, you guessed it, ugly. Whether or not I was successful depends solely on who's looking at it. Either way I'm getting much closer to fully relaxing again with my art. That's progress.
